Job Descriptions
All Editors
- Attend writers meetings, masthead meetings, staff meetings and important social events.
- Ensure story ideas are timely, relevant and fair
- Set deadlines at first editors’ meeting of the year, and ensuring these deadlines are adhered to by all staff and volunteers
- Ensure all photos appearing in their section have captions
- Send material to managing editor to be uploaded to the CUP wire where applicable and working with the photo editor to attach applicable photos/graphics
- Keep in touch with photo editor about photos needed and for which page
- Discuss with the managing editor a rough layout for their section where applicable.
- Attend additional functions such as staff training and social events
- Maintaining an updated contact directory and reference materials
- Ensure along with the editor-in-chief and managing editor that stories are in the correct format for layout.
Editor in Chief
- Sets overall editorial direction for the publication and serves as business manager
- Oversees hiring of all staff
- Conducts all editorial and staff meetings
- Oversees layout, design and production of online magazine
- Consults with adviser and school administration
- Works with finance director, adviser and school to formulate a budget
- Maintains communication with business and/or advertising manager
- Sets, explains and enforces deadlines and policies for the editorial staff
- Sets and maintains office hours to be available to staff and community
- Oversees training of new staff
- Ensures timely publication of the online magazine
- Leads editorial board, which decided subject and stance of editorials
- Must review along with adviser all controversial material for potential ethical and legal concerns
- Acts as liaison along with creative director to printer
- Oversees all contractual relations with all sponsors and advertisers
- Directly oversees director of advertising and sales to ensure sufficient advertising is sold
Managing Editor
- Assists editor in chief and acts as second in command
- Co-ordinates and supervises the layout of the paper, and ensures that the paper is completed according to a reasonable time structure
- Develops and reviews story ideas
- Reviews stories after they’ve been edited by section editors and makes additional comments and changes
- Along with the editor-in-chief, review every page, by-line, headline, story, photo and ad to ensure that copy is clean, error-free and accurate prior to print
- Makes all final decisions when editor is not available
- Creates online magazine skeleton for pre-production purposes
- Sets basic layout of paper in Indesign with aid from Creative Director
- Downloads, edits (if needed) and formats CUP material from the CUP Newswire
- Uploads and edits (if needed) material for national distribution to CUP Newswire

Senior Editor
- Assists managing editor and acts as team lead of the editors
- Co-ordinates and assists with the layout of the paper, and ensures that the paper is completed according to a reasonable time structure

Creative Director
- Responsible for the overall design of the online magazine, including the use and placement of fonts, photos and graphic elements
- Works managing editor to set basic layout and create online magazine skeleton
- Supervises and evaluates designers, graphic editors, graphic artists
- Reviews and updates design style guide for online magazine
- Oversees layout of online magazine, making sure the pages conform to design style and are finished on time
- Attends all executive and masthead meetings
- Assigns information graphics and graphic elements, such as charts, logos and maps; creates graphics if other staff aren’t available
- Helps coordinate with printer
Section Editors
- Attends all masthead and writers meetings
- Draws up a monthly story list for discussion with staff
- Assigns articles/stories to staff
- Edits and, if necessary, rewrites stories, preferably in consultation with the
staff member(s) who wrote them
- Trains new staff in writing, reporting, and editing techniques
- Downloading, editing (if needed) and formatting of CUP material from the CUP
News Wire in cooperation with the managing editor
- Prioritizing stories for each issue in association with the editor-in-chief,
managing editor, and photo editor
- Ensuring along with the editor-in-chief and managing editor that deadlines and procedures are established and kept
- Ensuring along with the editor-in-chief and managing editor that stories are in the correct format for layout and that each story contains a headline and by-line
- Consulting with the photo editor about the story list each month following writers meeting
- Ensuring that a summary of section stories is sent out to staff and volunteers by email every month following writers meeting
Copy Editor
- Oversees all copyediting and fact checking
- Reviews headlines and captions
- Meets regularly with editor in chief and other editors to discuss copy flow problems and changes to copy system
- Produces style and grammar memos to the staff, highlighting common problems and changes
Photo Editor
- Works with other editors to coordinate photography for the paper
- Supervises, coaches and evaluates all photographers
- Distributes assignments to photographers and tracks the progress of all photo assignments
- Helps photographers edit their work
- Advises creative director and editors on selection, cropping and placement of photos
Online Editor
- Oversees production and maintenance of online magazine’s website
- Makes sure all stories and images are posted in a timely fashion
- Supervises section editors on online submission
- Devises way to enhance web content with links, interactive features, podcasts and other special elements
- Attends all masthead meetings
- Assures adherence to all copyright laws and corrects mistakes on site
Junior Editor
- Attends all masthead and writers meetings
- Assists section editor with a monthly story list for discussion with staff
- Assists section editor with edits and, if necessary, rewrites stories, preferably in consultation with the staff member(s) who wrote them
- Consults with writers regarding edits and story focuses
- Works closely with managing editor and section editors to ensure they meet deadlines and have proper materials and information to complete their assignments
- Copy edits stories and assists online submission
- Organize and host meetings and events when required
- Assists with research, surveys, collection of data, writing stories and taking photos whenever necessary
- Recruit new volunteers and assist in their training
Director of Finance
- Reports directly to the Editor in Chief
- Responsible for planning, directing and controlling the resources and administrative functions for the online magazine following Ryerson financial policies and GAAP principles
- This included preparing budges, conducting financial analysis and preparing financial reports ; developing and implementing and effective system of accounting ; managing the account payable and receivable systems and maintaining accurate and current records
- Research, prepare and submit annual budget
- Attend all general meetings, and meetings with Editor in Chief prepared to make and discuss the online magazine’s financial status
Public Relations Intern
- Assists the editor-in-chief in the branding and marketing of CT Media
- Slander directed at the company will be dealt with by the PR first, before the editor. If slander gets out of hand, the editor will then be notified
- Ensures that the CT Media brand is transparent, accessible, well-known, respected and most importantly, protected
- Constantly protect and promote the name of this paper and what it stands for: “Providing high integrity news and views that connect students to the world beyond campus”
- Promote the CT Media brand via press releases, parties, social functions and conferences
- Provide feedback on the distribution of paper
- Conduct feedback surveys on quality of paper and content
- Research and locate press conferences – report these events to the Masthead so that our teams are always in close contact with the corporate world
- Attends all regular masthead meetings
- Works with Director of Sales and Marketing to promote brand effectively in order to solicit sponsorship and advertising
Sales Intern
- Solicits advertising account assigned by telephone and in person
- Seeks out new accounts
- Works with designers to design ads when necessary
- Writes of assists the advertiser in writing ad copy
- Informs advertiser of all changes
- Proofs all ads and notifies production staff of all errors or changes
- Provides tear sheets to accounts
- Completes all necessary forms for production
- Works with director of finance to complete billing accurately and on time
- Keeps accurate records of clients and prospects for regular submission to director of sales and advertising
Marketing Intern
- Works to update and maintain the CT’s website and CT’s presence on external sites, including social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook).
- Assists with development of fundraising and communications materials.
- Assists with creation and distribution of newsletters and promotional items.

- Helps to accurately maintain CT’s database of members and supporters.

Webmaster
- Responsible for the design of CT Media site including graphics, animation and functionality.
- To develop web page infrastructure
- To monitor web server and site technical performance.
- Implementing search engine optimization strategies.
- Circulate efficient and accurate reporting, detailing results of each web marketing campaign and possible improvement
- Advise Editor in Chief on the improvement, results, competition and new direction in technology to assist with marketing of the brand.
- Source and manage new revenue generating online marketing opportunities
- Ensure staff in trained and knowledgeable with CT Media’s website and emails.
CT TV
CT Student Media, the publishers of the online magazine Commerce Times, is launching a weekly viral news show called CTTV. The show is to be broadcast from Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone and will feature reports on business and tech news, politics, careers and interviews for students. For anyone looking for experience in the broadcast world, whether it be writing, hosting, reporting or production, we have a place for all.
Here are the positions we are currently looking to fill:
Hosts, writers and reporters: these people will attend weekly story meetings to come up with possible ideas for interviews and news segments. They will assist in the writing of the show script, with reporter pieces, and questions for interview subjects. Reporters will be required to provide a demo tape. We will be casting for two hosts, and will hold auditions in the 5th floor Digital Media Zone conference room on Tuesday September 27.
Videographers and editors: Videographers will be responsible for accompanying reporters on their story assignments and providing quality footage. The editors will then cut the stories based on requirements set out in the story meetings and information provided by the reporter.
The Desk
The assignment editor will attend story meetings and communicate with writers, editors and reporters to make sure the proper amount of segments are produced each week. They also ensure the focus on the stories and that they align with that weeks theme
The line up editor will attend story meetings and allocate time to each segment. They make sure the 12 minutes of airtime is met each week, as well as ensuring flow of the segments.
The producer will be an all-around leader who attends story meetings. They interact heavily with other members of the desk, as well as dip their toe in all parts of production. They will also be responsible for directing the show.
